One effective way to identifying parental depression (mother, father, guardian) is the use of standardized screening instruments by both the adult's primary care provider (e.g. obstetrician) pre & post natally, as well as the newborn's provider (e.g. pediatrician). We need to have effective screening practices as well as referral resources when parent/guardian found to have early signs of depression. Also early and frequent prenatal care is an important element in 'prevention.'
