I believe that this strategy is one of the most critical to implement if we really expect to see improved parent involvement in their children's lives. Parents need to feel accepted, supported and valued in order to be convinced of the critical role they play in the success of their children. I wholly endorse the idea of assigning an advocate prior to the child's birth. I'm certain this will prove to be the most expensive and challenging to implement, but I also believe that it will be the most effective strategy to reach parents' hearts and heads, prenatally, so that they really do act as their child's first and most important teacher. If we're serious about making significant change in strengthening the bond between parent and child, and thereby preparing many more children for success in school and in life, it will be well worth the effort.
